Vaultaire vs SPV Photo Vault
SPV is a simple photo vault with PIN protection. Vaultaire replaces the PIN with a pattern that generates a real encryption key, making files mathematically inaccessible.

PIN vs Pattern Security
SPV uses a standard numeric PIN to lock the app. A 4-digit PIN has 10,000 possible combinations. A 6-digit PIN has 1 million. These numbers sound large until you consider that automated tools can test every combination in seconds. More importantly, the PIN only gates app access -- it does not encrypt anything. Bypass the PIN (through a backup tool, jailbreak, or forensic extraction) and every file is immediately readable.
Vaultaire's pattern is not just an access gate -- it is an input to a key derivation function. The pattern, combined with a Secure Enclave hardware key, produces the AES-256-GCM encryption key. There is no file to read without this key. The pattern space is also significantly larger than a numeric PIN, and shoulder-surfing a pattern drawn on a grid is harder than watching someone type digits.
The Absence of Encryption
SPV stores photos and videos in the app's iOS sandbox in their original format. The sandbox provides some isolation from other apps at the OS level, but it offers no protection against physical access scenarios. Anyone who can access the device's file system -- through an iTunes backup, a forensic tool, or a jailbreak -- can read every file SPV claims to protect.
Vaultaire encrypts each file individually with AES-256-GCM before writing it to storage. The encrypted blob includes an authentication tag that detects tampering. Even with full file system access, an attacker sees only random-looking data that cannot be decrypted without the key derived from your specific pattern on your specific device's Secure Enclave.
Data Loss Risks
SPV users frequently report losing photos after app updates, iOS upgrades, or device transfers. Because files are stored unencrypted in the sandbox, they are subject to the same data loss risks as any other app data. There is no recovery mechanism beyond the files themselves -- if iOS cleans the sandbox or the app resets, the photos are gone permanently.
Vaultaire's encrypted container format is designed for durability. Files survive app updates because the container structure is independent of the app version. The BIP-39 recovery phrase allows you to restore access on a new device or after a complete reinstall. iCloud backup (Pro) adds an additional safety net with end-to-end encrypted cloud storage.
Simplicity vs Security: A False Tradeoff
SPV's appeal is its simplicity -- a clean interface with basic photo organization behind a PIN. The implicit argument is that real security is complex and unnecessary for most users. This framing is misleading. The complexity of encryption is entirely hidden from the user. Vaultaire's interface is equally simple: draw a pattern, see your files. The cryptographic machinery runs silently underneath.
The real question is not "do I need encryption?" but "why would I choose an app that doesn't encrypt?" If two apps offer the same user experience, but one encrypts your files and the other does not, there is no rational reason to choose the unencrypted option. Security is 機能ではなく you add -- it is a foundation you either build on or omit.
What SPV Users Complain About
Common complaints from App Store reviews, and how Vaultaire addresses each one.
"Found out the hard way that SPV doesn't actually encrypt anything. It's just a locked folder."
Vaultaireのアプローチ: Every file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM using hardware-backed keys. The simplicity of the interface does not compromise the strength of the cryptography underneath.
"Banner ads at the bottom, popup ads when switching albums. Constant interruptions."
Vaultaireのアプローチ: No ads at any tier. The free version includes encryption, pattern lock, and camera import without any advertising.
"Opened the app after the iOS update and my albums were empty. No warning, no backup, just gone."
Vaultaireのアプローチ: Encrypted container format survives OS updates. Recovery phrase enables restoration on any device. Optional iCloud backup adds additional protection.
"Had to reset my phone and lost everything in SPV. There's no recovery or backup option."
Vaultaireのアプローチ: The BIP-39 recovery phrase regenerates your encryption keys on any device. Enable iCloud backup for automatic encrypted cloud storage that survives device resets.
"My kid figured out the PIN by watching me once. The photos were right there, no second layer."
Vaultaireのアプローチ: Patterns are harder to shoulder-surf than PINs. The duress vault provides a second layer -- a decoy pattern opens a clean vault. And because files are encrypted, even bypassing the app entirely yields nothing readable.
シンプルなインターフェース。本物の暗号化。
Vaultaire is as easy to use as SPV, but every file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Starting at free.
