How to blur faces in a photo
Choose a photo, scan for faces, and review the boxes. Pixelate the faces you want to hide or cover them with a solid color, then create a PNG. The image is processed on your device without an upload.
Choose one photo
Open a still JPEG, PNG, or WebP from your device. You can also drag a photo or screenshot onto the editor.
Find and cover the details
Select Faces or Text to suggest areas. Add anything missed, move or resize a box, and remove unwanted boxes with the close button. Choose Pixelate or Solid cover, then check the entire image at a closer zoom.
Download the redacted PNG
Choose an image size and select Create PNG. The download starts after the file checks finish. Redownload saves another copy; changing an edit lets you create a new PNG.
Pixelate faces in photos
Use the face scan for portraits, group photos, or people in the background. Every suggested box stays editable. Change the block size to adjust the pixelated effect, or use a solid cover to replace the selected pixels completely.
Face detection can miss people. Check small faces, reflections, and anyone partly outside the frame. The surroundings, clothing, and other visible clues can still identify someone.
Blur license plates and house numbers
A plate, a street number, a delivery label, or a name badge can place you as precisely as GPS metadata does. Draw a box over each one and choose Solid cover, because pixelation can leave enough shape for a reader to guess the characters.
To censor a photo before you post it, work outward from the subject: plates, screens, documents, reflections in windows and glasses, and anything written on a wall behind the person. Add a box by hand for anything the scan does not suggest.
Cover text in screenshots
Redact names, account numbers, messages, and other visible text before sharing an image. The text scan suggests rectangles; you choose which ones to keep. Add a box by hand for a signature, license plate, or anything the scan missed.
For sensitive text, use an opaque solid cover and leave a margin around every character. Pixelation can preserve clues about letters and numbers.
What your downloaded image contains
- Format
- One flattened PNG with your enabled areas pixelated or covered. No editable redaction layers or added watermark.
- Dimensions
- Up to 2048 pixels on the longest edge by default. Choose 4096 pixels or the original dimensions when needed.
- Metadata
- Source EXIF, GPS, XMP, and IPTC data are not copied. The output is checked before download. Use the photo metadata remover if you only want to remove metadata without changing visible pixels.
- Original photo
- Your source file stays unchanged on your device. Reset photo removes edits in this editor; Change photo opens a different source.
Face blur and photo redaction questions
Is this photo redactor free?
Yes. You can scan faces and text, edit the areas, and download a PNG for free. There is no account, install, watermark, or payment step.
Does this tool upload my photo?
No. Your photo, filename, edits, and output stay in browser memory. Face and text detectors download from Vaultaire in the background when you open this page. This tool sends no analytics. Change photo or close the page to release the editor’s copy; Reset photo removes edits while keeping the photo open.
Is face blur the same as pixelation?
This tool hides faces with a blocky pixelation effect or an opaque solid cover. It does not apply a smooth blur filter. Pixelation can leave recognizable clues, so choose Solid cover when you want to replace all pixels inside an area.
Can I black out text in a screenshot?
Yes. Open a JPEG, PNG, or WebP screenshot, choose Text to suggest areas, then select Solid cover. Use the color picker for black or another opaque color. Add or enlarge boxes until every character you want to hide is covered.
Will automatic detection find every face or private detail?
No. Face and text scans provide suggestions. Small, sideways, partly hidden, reflected, or low-contrast details can be missed. Review the whole image and use Add area for anything missed, including addresses, signatures, screens, and license plates.
Does the PNG keep EXIF or GPS metadata?
The exported PNG does not copy the source photo’s EXIF, GPS, XMP, or IPTC metadata. Metadata removal does not hide visible addresses, landmarks, reflections, or other clues inside the picture; cover those yourself.
Can I use an iPhone HEIC photo?
Save a JPEG copy first. This editor accepts one still JPEG, PNG, or WebP up to 40 MB and 50 megapixels. It needs a browser with the required image-processing features. Large photos can exceed a phone’s memory; start with the smaller export size.
Can I keep the original photo dimensions?
Yes. Select Original dimensions under Image size before creating the PNG. The default limits the longest edge to 2048 pixels; Large uses 4096 pixels. Edits and browser color processing still change the image, and the original file on your device is not overwritten.
Can I blur faces in a video or redact a PDF?
This tool edits one still image. It does not track faces through video or edit PDF files. For a screenshot, save the frame or page as a JPEG, PNG, or WebP and redact that image.
Can this unblur or sharpen a photo?
No. This tool only adds pixelation or an opaque cover. It cannot restore detail that a blurry photo never recorded, and it cannot reverse a blur that another tool applied.
