Free local image cropper

Crop an image without uploading it

Move or size a rectangle over the part you want to keep. Vaultaire crops the image in your browser, removes supported source metadata, and checks the new file before download.

To crop an image: choose a still JPEG, PNG, or WebP, frame the part you want to keep, and download the verified result. Your original file stays unchanged.

What does this image cropper do?

Vaultaire keeps one rectangular part of a still JPEG, PNG, or WebP and removes the pixels outside it. The selected area keeps its source-pixel width and height.

The file is decoded, cropped, encoded, and checked in a dedicated browser worker. No crop API receives the image. Download stays locked until the new file passes a fresh structure scan and a second pixel decode.

How to crop an image online

  1. Choose an image. Select one still JPEG, PNG, or WebP. The browser checks the file before showing the crop frame.
  2. Frame the part to keep. Drag the rectangle, choose a fixed ratio, use the arrow keys, or enter exact source pixels.
  3. Download the checked copy. The new file stays locked until its dimensions, decoded pixels, and supported metadata pass.

Crop versus resize

Cropping changes the composition. It removes pixels outside the rectangle you choose. A 1,200 by 800 pixel selection produces a 1,200 by 800 pixel output.

Resizing changes the pixel dimensions. It keeps the full image but makes its raster smaller or larger. If a website asks for an exact output size after cropping, use the image resizer next.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

The selected rectangle is not scaled, but the browser must create a new file. PNG uses lossless encoding under this tool's pixel-check tolerance. JPEG and lossy WebP can change pixel values according to the encoder setting.

Vaultaire retains the selected RGBA pixels inside the worker, decodes the new file again, and compares the result before enabling download. The check can detect a wrong rectangle, failed decode, or excessive encoder drift. It does not make JPEG lossless or prove that two browsers will create identical bytes.

JPEG, PNG, or WebP output

Image cropper output choices
Format Best for Transparency Setting
JPEG Photos and broad compatibility No. A background choice is required. Encoder quality
PNG Graphics, text, and exact alpha Yes Lossless output encoding
WebP Smaller modern web images Yes, when the browser encoder supports it Encoder quality

The browser tests each encoder after you choose a file. A format is disabled if the returned file type, signature, or test decode does not match the request.

Private image cropping without an upload

Cloudflare serves this page and its static code. After selection, the file moves only between the page and a same-origin worker in your browser. Client analytics send fixed lifecycle events to Vaultaire's PostHog proxy, the only connection the page's Content Security Policy allows, and the image is never part of them.

Cropping creates a new raster and does not preserve the original encoded image data. Supported source metadata is reported, not copied, and scanned again in the output. This does not detect or remove every invisible pixel watermark or proprietary steganographic signal.

Image cropper FAQ

What is the difference between cropping and resizing?

Cropping removes pixels outside a selected rectangle and changes the composition. Resizing keeps the full composition but changes its pixel dimensions. This tool crops without resizing the selected area.

Can I crop a photo to a square?

Yes. Choose the 1:1 ratio, position the square over the part you want to keep, and crop the image.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

The selected area keeps its source-pixel dimensions, but the browser creates a new file. PNG uses lossless encoding, while JPEG and lossy WebP can change pixel values. Vaultaire decodes the output again and checks it against the selected pixels.

Which image formats can I crop?

The cropper accepts one still JPEG, PNG, or WebP. It offers JPEG, PNG, and WebP output when the current browser can create and verify that format.

Does the image cropper upload my photo?

No. The selected image is read, cropped, encoded, and verified inside your browser, with no upload or processing API. PostHog receives fixed lifecycle events, never image bytes, filenames, dimensions, crop coordinates, or settings.

Does cropping remove photo metadata?

The new file does not copy supported source EXIF, XMP, location, origin, or C2PA records. Vaultaire scans the output again and blocks download if supported private or origin metadata remains. It cannot rule out every proprietary or pixel-embedded signal.

Can I enter the crop rectangle in exact pixels?

Yes. Enter the X and Y position plus the width and height in source pixels. The crop rectangle and receipt update to those exact integer values.
